Have you noticed anything different about your dog lately? Your pup might be overdue for a groom.
Regular dog grooming is more than just about looks; it’s essential for your pet’s health, wellbeing and comfort, while helping prevent any issues. Grooming isn’t just about brushing either, and can involve nail clipping, hair trims, washing, teeth cleaning and anal gland expression.
While every pup is different, there are a few indicators that your dog might be overdue for a groom, beyond long hair.

Matted or Tangled Fur
Mats form when fur gets twisted and tangled, trapping dirt and moisture close to the skin. This can cause discomfort, itching, and even infections. Breeds with long or curly coats, like Poodles or Maltese, are especially prone to mats. Brushing can help prevent this but if you notice it getting harder to maintain, consider booking a groom.
Strong or Unpleasant Odour
Odour can come from built-up oils, dirt, or ear infections. If your dog starts to smell bad soon after a bath, it could be a sign that they need more frequent grooming. Regular grooming with an ear clean can target the smell from the source.
Constant Scratching or Licking
Excessive scratching or licking may be signs of skin allergies, dry skin or fleas. Grooming helps soothe the skin by removing allergens and dirt, while also allowing early detection of any issues your vet should check.
Long Hair Between Paw Pads
Hair growing between the paw pads can trap dirt and cause your dog to slip or feel uncomfortable. Trimming this hair during grooming helps keep your dog’s paws clean and safe.
Overgrown Nails
Long nails can make walking painful and lead to joint problems. If you hear your dog’s nails clicking on hard floors or see them curling, it’s time for a trim. Regular nail clipping during grooming keeps your dog comfortable and healthy.
Tear Stains or Eye Discharge
Some dogs, especially smaller breeds, get tear stains or discharge around their eyes. This build up can cause irritation or infection if not cleaned regularly. Groomers pay special attention to eye hygiene to keep your pup comfortable.
Regular grooming plays a key role in the comfort and happiness of your dog. If you’ve noticed any of these signs, it might be time to book a grooming session.
